The Ghost of Findlater Castle

According to local folklore, the spirit that haunts Findlater is that of a devoted nursemaid, forever searching for the child she could not save. One version of the story tells of a noble family once residing at the castle. One summer’s day, the nurse was holding a young boy in her arms near a high window overlooking the sea — perhaps even one of those still visible in the ruins today. In a sudden and tragic moment, the child squirmed free from her grasp and tumbled over the edge, vanishing down the sheer cliffside to his death on the rocks below.

Panicked and heartbroken, the nurse scrambled after him, either in a desperate attempt to save him or overcome by grief. She too fell to her death.

Visitors have reported strange sensations when standing near the archways and openings facing the sea — chills without wind, footsteps behind them, and the sense of being watched. Some claim to have seen a pale figure moving silently among the stonework, glancing down over the edge, as if still searching the waves below.

Whether you believe in ghosts or not, there's no denying the atmosphere at Findlater. Is it just the sea breeze and the cries of gulls? Or is the nursemaid still there, wandering eternally through the ruins, forever bound to the cliffs where tragedy struck?
